Ten Canoes is a 2006 film. It was directed by Rolf de Heer and Peter Djigirr and starred Crusoe Kurddal. The title of the film arose from discussions between de Heer and David Gulpilil about a photograph of ten canoeists poling across the Arafura Swamp, taken by anthropologist Donald Thomson in 1936.

The film is set in Arnhem Land, in a time before western contact, and tells the story of a warrior Dayindi (Jamie Gulpilil), who hunts goose eggs while being told another story about another young man who, like Dayindi, coveted his elder brother's wife. The sequences featuring Dayindi, set shortly before contact with white people, are in black and white, while shots set in the present and in the distant past are in colour. The film is narrated in English by David Gulpilil; all protagonists speak in indigenous dialects of the Yolŋu Matha language group, with subtitles. A narration in Yolŋu Matha is also available. It is about a white Australian lawyer whose seemingly normal life is disrupted after he takes on a murder case for Aborigine defendants. To ensure an authentic representation of Aboriginal culture, the director flew to Darwin where he met with Nandjiwarra Amagula, a respected tribal elder and magistrate on Groote Island. “Anything with the Aboriginals underwent change,” Peter Weir replied. “Nandjiwarra was the key. In accepting to do the film, he accepted the principal of recreating a lost Sydney tribe and their symbols and tokens.” However, there were certain conditions; Nandjiwarra would not allow the use of existing tribal symbols which resulted in the art director creating fictional ones.

Where the Green Ants Dream

Where the Green Ants Dream is a 1984 film by German film director Werner Herzog. It was Herzog's first film in English although also dubbed into German. Based partly on the Milirrpum v Nabalco Pty Ltd case and making use of professional actors as well as Aboriginal activists who were involved in the case, it was a mix of actual facts and fiction. The ant mythology was claimed as Herzog's own, however some natives did consider the green ant as the totem animal that created the world and humans. Wandjuk Marika noted that the ant dreaming belief existed in a clan that lived near Oenpelli in the Northern Territory. The film is set in the Australian desert and is about a land feud between a mining company (which he called Ayers to avoid any legal threats from Nabalco) and the native Aborigines. The Aborigines claim that an area the mining company wishes to work on is the place where green ants dream, and that disturbing them will destroy humanity. The film was entered in the 1984 Cannes Film Festival. [more]

This was the official Redwood Summer recruitment video which I collaborated on with Mary Liz Thomson and Tim Modok Pearson, two Video Guys Mike Roselle introduced to me.

After we finished it, I took it and two musicians with me on the official Redwood Summer Road Show, which took two months and 10,000 miles to complete. It even spurred its own three-day road blockade action on Mount Graham and a brand new video of that action, Uprising On Mount Graham, which is also up here.

It was also future Earth Liberation Front arsonist Avalon's first arrest action (He was the first one to volunteer and get arrested on Mount Graham). Apparently it was my Prescott Arizona road show presentation, the last of the tour, and this video that inspired him to join up with Earth First! back in 1990.

And I'm currently working with and providing video footage for Mary Liz on her latest project, a portrait of Judi Bari she is making with Darryl Cherney.

Redwood Summer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: Organized in 1990, Redwood Summer was a movement of environmental activism aimed at protecting old-growth Redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) trees from logging by northern California timber companies. Headwaters Forest Reserve near Eureka, California is the largest area of old-growth forest protected as a result of the Redwood Summer protests.

This was in the second week of June, about three weeks after Judi Bari and Darryl Cherney were car-bombed on May 24, 1990 and a week before the first Redwood Summer action.

As I remember, Darryl called me up at the last minute and asked me to sub for Judi at a Redwood Summer engagement previously set up.

Dawn & Ophidia played music and I showed video of Judi's first interview after the bombing and the last video I shot of her and Darryl before the bombing which was at the E-Law conference on March 3, 1990 in Eugene Oregon. Also shown (and explained by me) is the notorious intro to the 60 Minutes segment in which Darryl said he would strap dynamite around himself and blow up the Glen Canyon Damn if he had a fatal disease.

So this turned out to be the first show or pre-show of my 10,000-mile official Redwood Summer Road Show and 35 more shows on into October. Actually, it was my first Earth First! road show presentation of any kind.

I cover a lot of historic Earth First! turf and I don't make too many mis-statements. I talk about much that I have long since forgotten, so it has a lot of historical value. Sadly, I was wrong about the longterm impact of the bombing on Judi, who died seven years later from breast cancer metastasizing into her liver.

Judi Bari was nearly killed in a still-unsolved terrorist attack on May 24, 1990, when a motion-triggered pipe bomb wrapped with nails exploded directly under her driver's seat. She and Darryl Cherney were driving through Oakland, California when the bomb exploded. They were on a concert and speaking tour to recruit college students for Redwood Summer, a campaign of nonviolent mass protests against corporate liquidation logging.

Since the very beginning of the Occupy Wall Street, many supporters have been appalled by the lack of attention paid to it by the mainstream media. Some news outlets have belittled OWS participants for exercising their right to free speech, and made excuses for those who have used violence against peaceful protesters.

The OBEY sticker campaign


The OBEY sticker campaign can be explained as an experiment in Phenomenology. Heidegger describes Phenomenology as “the process of letting things manifest themselves.” Phenomenology attempts to enable people to see clearly something that is right before their eyes but obscured; things that are so taken for granted that they are muted by abstract observation.

The FIRST AIM OF PHENOMENOLOGY is to reawaken a sense of wonder about one’s environment. The OBEY sticker attempts to stimulate curiosity and bring people to question both the sticker and their relationship with their surroundings. Because people are not used to seeing advertisements or propaganda for which the product or motive is not obvious, frequent and novel encounters with the sticker provoke thought and possible frustration, nevertheless revitalizing the viewer’s perception and attention to detail. The sticker has no meaning but exists only to cause people to react, to contemplate and search for meaning in the sticker. Because OBEY has no actual meaning, the various reactions and interpretations of those who view it reflect their personality and the nature of their sensibilities.

Many people who are familiar with the sticker find the image itself amusing, recognizing it as nonsensical, and are able to derive straightforward visual pleasure without burdening themselves with an explanation. The PARANOID OR CONSERVATIVE VIEWER however may be confused by the sticker’s persistent presence and condemn it as an underground cult with subversive intentions. Many stickers have been peeled down by people who were annoyed by them, considering them an eye sore and an act of petty vandalism, which is ironic considering the number of commercial graphic images everyone in American society is assaulted with daily.

Another phenomenon the sticker has brought to light is the trendy and CONSPICUOUSLY CONSUMPTIVE nature of many members of society. For those who have been surrounded by the sticker, its familiarity and cultural resonance is comforting and owning a sticker provides a souvenir or keepsake, a memento. People have often demanded the sticker merely because they have seen it everywhere and possessing a sticker provides a sense of belonging. The Giant sticker seems mostly to be embraced by those who are (or at least want to seem to be) rebellious. Even though these people may not know the meaning of the sticker, they enjoy its slightly disruptive underground quality and wish to contribute to the furthering of its humorous and absurd presence which seems to somehow be antiestablishment/societal convention. Giant stickers are both embraced and rejected, the reason behind which, upon examination reflects the psyche of the viewer. Whether the reaction be positive or negative, the stickers existence is worthy as long as it causes people to consider the details and meanings of their surroundings. Igloolik is a community of 1200 people located on a small island in the north Baffin region of the Canadian Arctic with archeological evidence of 4000 years of continuous habitation. Hurdy Gurdy Girls



Over the years, the German hurdy-gurdy maker Kurt Reichmann has assembled an astonishing collection of early graphic and historical material, much of it original, depicting hurdy-gurdies and bagpipes; in 1995 he opened a gallery in Frankfurt to display these works...

In the beginning of the 1800's bitter poverty ruled in wide areas of Hessen. This had several causes, including a population increase due to families having many children and subsequent division by inheritance of the land into ever-smaller pieces, to the extent that viable farming became impossible.

To supplement their incomes, in the 1820s farmers and farmworkers began to make wooden brooms and fly-whisks during the winter which they, as itinerant peddlers, sold in the summers in the surrounding areas. This trade soon expanded beyond the borders of Hessen and reached England, France and even Russia.

It was soon discovered that the wares sold better when accompanied by dancing, hurdy-gurdy playing girls. Quickly the dancing and music became ever more important and the pretty girls became ever better known; it was soon realized that there was a lot of easy money to be made.

The success of the hurdy-gurdy girls then began to attract what in German are called "soul-merchants," who put the naive village girls under contract while enticing the parents with tales of how much money their children would be sending home; as a result, there were often no young women to be found in many villages of the region. The soul-merchants took the girls to dance halls and such, where the clientele was mostly sailors and miners. Thus the girls of Hessen came to nearly all countries of Europe, especially England (where they were called "Hurdy-Gurdy girls" and "Hessian Broom Girls") and also to Australia, Cuba and North America - where California was a particularly desirable destination, as the gold fields there promised brisk business, and where, because of their origins, they were also known as "Rhinelanders."

A very few young women, well-off through prostitution and dressed in finery, returned to their villages and encouraged the stay-at-homes to make the same journeys. But the life of most of the hurdy-gurdy girls was hard and many returned home broken, penniless and sick. Often the girls were forced into prostitution by their "agents" and from there slid into a criminal milieu. Meanwhile, as the business intensified, it became something of a community secret in many places - even mayors and teachers profited, by brokering "contracts" between the girls and the "traders."

The first resistance to all of this came from the church. Pastors preached against the situation from the pulpit and protested it in newspapers. In 1848 a Pastor Schellenberg carried a petition against the practice of the "sale of souls into foriegn lands" to the government, but it was not acted upon. [The document was part of the exhibition]. In 1860 another pastor, Ottokar Schupp, brought public attention to the situation in the villages with his novel, "Hurdy-Gurdy." Finally, in 1865 the government issued a "most-highest prohibition" against the "taking along of children for the purpose of the fly-whisk trade" and so ended, eventually, because of public opinion and government edict, the time of the fly-whisk merchants, the broom merchants, the "Hessian broom girls" and the hurdy-gurdy girls.

Body Ritual Among the Nacirema Tribe


Most cultures exhibit a particular configuration or style. A single value or pattern of perceiving the world often leaves its stamp on several institutions in the society. Examples are "machismo" in Spanish-influenced cultures, "face" in Japanese culture, and "pollution by females" in some highland New Guinea cultures. Here Horace Miner demonstrates that "attitudes about the body" have a pervasive influence on many institutions in Nacirema society.

"The anthropologist has become so familiar with the diversity of ways in which different people behave in similar situations that he is not apt to be surprised by even the most exotic customs. In fact, if all of the logically possible combinations of behavior have not been found somewhere in the world, he is apt to suspect that they must be present in some yet undescribed tribe. The point has, in fact, been expressed with respect to clan organization by Murdock (1949: 71).[2] In this light, the magical beliefs and practices of the Nacirema present such unusual aspects that it seems desirable to describe them as an example of the extremes to which human behavior can go..."

Body Ritual Among the Nacirema Tribe

Nacirema culture spends a considerable portion of the days in ritual activity. The focus of this activity is the human body, the appearance and health of which loom as a dominant concern in the ethos of the people. While such a concern is certainly not unusual, its ceremonial aspects and associated philosophy are unique.

The fundamental belief underlying the whole system appears to be that the human body is ugly and that its natural tendency is to debility and disease. Incarnated in such a body, man's only hope is to avert these characteristics through the use of the powerful influences of ritual and ceremony. Every household has one or more shrines devoted to this purpose.

While each family has at least one such shrine, the rituals associated with it are not family ceremonies but are private and secret. The rites are normally only discussed with children and then only during the period when they are being initiated into these mysteries. I was able, however, to establish sufficient rapport with the natives to examine these shrines and to have the rituals described to me.

The focal point of the shrine is a box or chest. In this chest are kept the many charms and magical potions without which no native believes he could live. These preparations are secured from a variety of specialized practitioners. The most powerful of these are the medicine men, whose assistance must be rewarded with substantial gifts. However, the medicine men do not provide the curative potions for their clients, but decide what the ingredients should be and then write them down in an ancient and secret language. This writing is understood only by the medicine men and by the herbalist who, for another gift, provides the required charm.

The charm is not disposed of after it has served its purpose but is placed in the charm–box of the household shrine. As these magical materials are specific for certain ills, and the real or imagined maladies of the people are many, the charm–box is usually overflowing. The magical packets are so numerous that people forget what their purposes were and fear to use them again. We can only assume that the idea in retaining all the old magical materials is that their presence in the charm–box, before which the body rituals are conducted, will in some way protect the worshipper.

In the hierarchy of magical practitioners, and below the medicine men in prestige, are specialists whose designation is best translated "holy–mouth–men." The Nacirema have an almost pathological horror of and fascination with the mouth, the condition of which is believed to have a supernatural influence on all social relationships. Were it not for the rituals of the mouth, they believe that their teeth would fall out, their gums bleed, their jaws shrink, their friends desert them, and their lovers reject them.

In addition to the private mouth–rite, people seek out a holy–mouth–man once or twice a year. These practitioners have an impressive set ofparaphernalia, consisting of a variety of augers, awls, probes, and prods. The use of these objects in the exorcism of the evils of the mouth involves almost unbelievable ritual torture of the client. The holy–mouth–man opens the clients mouth and, using the above mentioned tools, enlarges any holes which decay may have created in the teeth. Magical materials are put into these holes. If there are no naturally occurring holes in the teeth, large sections of one or more teeth are gouged out so that the supernatural substance can be applied. In the client's view, the purpose of these ministrations is to arrest decay and to draw friends. The extremely sacred and traditional character of the rite is evident in the fact that the natives return to the holy–mouth–men year after year, despite the fact that their teeth continue to decay.

It is to be hoped that, when a thorough study of the Nacirema is made, there will be careful inquiry into the personality structure of these people. One has but to watch the gleam in the eye of a holy–mouth–man, as he jabs an awl into an exposed nerve, to suspect that a certain amount of sadism is involved. If this can be established, a very interesting pattern emerges, for most of the population shows definite masochistic tendencies. It was to these that Professor Linton referred in discussing a distinctive part of the daily body ritual which is performed only by men. This part of the rite involves scraping and lacerating the surface of the face with a sharp instrument. Special women's rites are performed only four times during each lunar month, but what they lack in frequency is made up in barbarity. As part of this ceremony, women bake their heads in small ovens for about an hour. The theoretically interesting point is that what seems to be a preponderantly masochistic people have developed sadistic specialists.

The medicine men have an imposing temple, or latipso, in every community of any size. The more elaborate ceremonies required to treat very sick patients can only be performed at this temple. The supplicant entering the temple is first stripped of all his or her clothes. In every–day life the Nacirema avoids exposure of his body and its natural functions. Bathing and excretory acts are performed only in secrecy where they are ritualized as part of the body–rites. Psychological shock results from the fact that body secrecy is suddenly lost upon entry into the latipso. A man, whose own wife have never seen him in an excretory act, suddenly finds himself naked while he performs his natural functions into a sacred vessel. This sort of ceremonial treatment is necessitated by the fact that the excreta are used by a diviner to ascertain the course and nature of the client's sickness. Female clients, on the other hand, find their naked bodies are subjected to the scrutiny, manipulation and prodding of the medicine men.

In conclusion, mention must be made of certain practices which have their base in native esthetics but which depend upon the pervasive aversion to the natural body and its functions. There are ritual fasts to make fat people thin and ceremonial feasts to make thin people fat. Still other rites are used to make women's breasts larger if they are small, and smaller if they are large. General dissatisfaction with breast shape is symbolized in the fact that the ideal form is virtually outside the range of human variation. A few women afflicted with almost inhuman hypermamary development are so idolized that they make a handsome living by simply permitting the natives to stare at them for a fee.

Reference has already been made to the fact that excretory functions are ritualized, routinized, and relegated to secrecy. Natural reproductive functions are similarly distorted. Intercourse is taboo as a topic and scheduled as an act. Efforts are made to avoid pregnancy by the use of magical materials or by limiting intercourse to certain phases of the moon. Conception is actually very infrequent. When pregnant, women dress so as to hide their condition. Parturition takes place in secret, without friends or relatives to assist, and majority of women do not nurse their infants.

Our review of the ritual life of the Nacirema has certainly shown them to be a magic–ridden people. It is hard to understand how they have managed to exist so long under the burdens which they have imposed upon themselves.

"Trust me, the police do not want to be put in this position. And cities really need to ask themselves, is there another way to handle this kind of conflict?" Wexler says. Stamper notes, "There are many compassionate, decent, competent police officers who do a terrific job day in and day out. There are others who are, quote, 'bad apples.' What both of them have in common is that they 'occupy,' as it were, a system, a structure that itself is rotten. And I am talking about the paramilitary bureaucracy." We are also joined by Stephen Graham, author of "Cities Under Siege: The New Military Urbanism," and by retired New York Supreme Court Judge Karen Smith, who worked as a legal observer Tuesday morning in New York after the police raided the Occupy Wall Street encampment. "I was there to take down the names of people who were arrested... As I’m standing there, some African-American woman goes up to a police officer and says, 'I need to get in. My daughter's there. I want to know if she’s OK.’ And he said, 'Move on, lady.' And they kept pushing with their sticks, pushing back. And she was crying. And all of a sudden, out of nowhere, he throws her to the ground and starts hitting her in the head," says Smith. "I walk over, and I say, 'Look, cuff her if she's done something, but you don’t need to do that.’ And he said, 'Lady, do you want to get arrested?' And I said, 'Do you see my hat? Occupy Homes: New Coalition Links Homeowners, Activists in Direct Action to Halt Foreclosures



A loose-knit coalition of activists known as "Occupy Homes" is working to stave off pending evictions by occupying homes at risk of foreclosure when tenants enlist its support. The movement has recently enjoyed a number of successes. We speak with Monique White, a Minneapolis resident who is facing foreclosure and recently requested the help of Occupy Minneapolis. Now two dozen of its members are occupying her home in order to stave off eviction. We are also joined by Nick Espinosa, an organizer with Occupy Minneapolis, and Max Rameau, a key organizer with Take Back the Land, who for the past five years has worked on direct actions that reclaim and occupy homes at risk of foreclosure. "The banks are actually occupying our homes," Rameau says. "This sets up for an incredible movement, where we have a one-two punch. On the one hand, we’re occupying them on their turf, and on the other, we’re liberating our own turf so that human beings can have access to housing, rather than them sitting vacant so that corporations can benefit from them sometime in the future." New report finds secret toxic chemicals in brand name cleaners

Household cleaners are commonly marketed as necessary in the fight against germs to make your home safer and cleaner, but many products - including those marketed as “green” alternatives - could be dangerous to your health and include toxic chemicals that companies are not required to list on the label. That’s according to a new report out from Women’s Voices for the Earth, a national non profit and research organization.

The report is called “Dirty Secrets: What’s Hiding in Your Cleaning Products” and it finds that hidden chemicals in laundry detergents, air fresheners and disinfectant sprays are linked to cancer, birth defects and pregnancy complications.
