Trump administration delays listing of rusty patched bumblebee as endangered

Bombus affinis. Photo by USGS Bee Inventory and Monitoring Lab.

Last month, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) declared that it was placing the rusty patched bumblebee on the U.S. endangered species list.

The listing would have taken effect today, making this nearly extinct bumblebee the very first bumblebee species to be protected under the Endangered Species Act. The rusty patched bumblebee (Bombus affinis) would also have been the first wild bee species to be declared endangered in the continental U.S.

Now, thanks to an executive order by U.S. President Donald Trump, the listing has been delayed.

The bumblebee was declared endangered during Barack Obama’s last days as the president. On January 20, however, the Trump administration placed a freeze on any rules that have been issued by the Obama administration but haven’t taken effect yet.

Following this order, the FWS announced Thursday that it was postponing the bumblebee’s listing date to March 21.

“In accordance with a January 20, 2017, memo from the White House, we, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, are delaying the effective date of a rule we published on January 11, 2017,” the FWS said. “The effective date of the rule that published on January 11, 2017, at 82 FR 3186, is delayed from February 10, 2017, to March 21, 2017.”

Bees added to US endangered species list for the first time | Environment | The Guardian

Seven types of bees once found in abundance in Hawaii have become the first bees to be added to the US federal list of endangered and threatened species.

Placing yellow-faced bees under federal safeguards comes just over a week since the US Fish and Wildlife Service proposed adding the imperilled rusty patched bumble bee, a prized but vanishing pollinator once found in the upper midwest and north-eastern United States, to the endangered and threatened species list.
One of several wild bee species seen declining over the past two decades, the rusty patched bumble bee is the first in the continental United States formally proposed for protections.

...The listing decision, published on Friday in the Federal Register, classifies seven varieties of yellow-faced or masked bees as endangered, due to such factors as habitat loss, wildfires and the invasion of non-native plants and insects...
...The bees faced a variety of threats including “feral pigs, invasive ants, loss of native habitat due to invasive plants, fire, as well as development, especially in some for the coastal areas”, Jepson told Associated Press...
...Hawaii-based entomologist Karl Magnacca said the bees “tend to favor the more dominant trees and shrubs we have here”, he said. “People tend to focus on the rare plants, and those are important, that’s a big part of the diversity. But the other side is maintaining the common ones as common. (The bees) help maintain the structure of the whole forest.”
The bees were critical for maintaining the health of plants and other animals across the islands, said Gregory Koob, conservation and restoration team manager for the Fish and Wildlife Service in Honolulu.
“Those plants are not only food and nesting habitat for the bees, but they also provide habitat for other animals,” he said. “It’s the web of life.”

Make no mistake. Vast GMO monocultures and Roundup herbicide are the main reason for the Monarch butterfly decline. Monsanto and the agrichemical industry are fully aware of this. Boycott GMOs. Boycott Roundup. Save the Monarch.

#SavetheBees :: Tell the EPA: Suspend neonics now! | Friends of the Earth

The science is clear: neonics harm bees and other pollinators. Now, the EPA has confirmed that these toxic pesticides don't help many farmers, either.

Two of the biggest producers of neonics -- Bayer and Syngenta -- are panicking. They're pulling out all the stops to prevent the EPA from taking action on their analysis.

We only have until December 22nd to comment. Tell the EPA: Protect bees, not chemical companies' profits, and suspend bee-killing pesticides NOW!

Tell Congress to support the Save America's Pollinators Act | Friends of the Earth | petitions

Around the world, bees are dying at alarming rates and new science is pointing to the world’s most popular class of pesticides called neonicotinoids (also called neonics), made by giant chemical companies Bayer and Syngenta, as the key factor in the global bee die-off.
These key pollinators need our help. Without immediate action to save bees, which pollinate two-thirds of our food crops, everything from almonds to strawberries could disappear from supermarket shelves.
Fortunately, Representatives John Conyers (D, Mich.) and Earl Blumenauer (D, Ore.) just introduced a bill to give our bees a fighting chance. The “Save America’s Pollinators Act” will suspend the use of toxic, bee-killing pesticides until a full review of scientific evidence indicates they are safe and a field study demonstrates they do no harm to bees and other pollinators.
This past spring, the European Union placed a two year ban on most neonics -- but the EPA is dragging its feet, ignoring mounting scientific evidence and delaying action until 2018.

The bees can't wait, and neither can we. Tell Congress to stand up for bees today!
