Judge to FDA: The Government Must Pull Aside Curtain on GE Salmon | Earthjustice

Recently, a U.S. District Court judge took the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to task for withholding government documents related to the agency’s approval of genetically engineered (GE) salmon. The judge’s decision is a big win for public transparency, but it’s also a small step toward finally doing a proper evaluation of the risks posed by GE animals—which could one day end up on our dinner plates...

Corporate Imperialism – The only reason for GMOs | Dr Vandana Shiva

Corporate Imperialism – The only reason for GMOs

“Here’s what I’ll do as President. I’ll immediately implement Country of Origin Labelling because Americans should know where their food comes from. And we’ll let folks know whether their food has been genetically modified because Americans should know what they’re buying,”
– President Barack Obama
President Obama’s campaign promise reassured the American people President Obama was on their side, looking out for their basic right to safe food. As his second term comes closer to an end, President Obama’s promise to protect American people from the established and yet-unknown effects of genetically modified food, lies un-fulfilled. What happened between the campaign trail and the taking of office? Did Obama change his mind on the importance of letting Americans know what they are eating? The President’s and the First Family’s food is organic. He has not changed his mind but his window to fulfil his promise of 2007 is closing fast. Or was that window sealed shut as soon as he took office? Is the most powerful person in the world not allowed to safely label the food his country eats, even if he wants to?

5.25 MARCH AGAINST MONSANTO / everywhere

BAD APPLE by Michael D'Antuono
- via
Activist Post: Provocative Portrayal of Monsanto in Support of the Worldwide March Against Them
"Activist artist Michael D'Antuono, known for his often controversial paintings on hot button issues, is now aiming his critical brush at the mega agricultural biotechnology corporation, Monsanto. "

On May 25, activists around the world will unite to March Against Monsanto

Why do we march?

Research studies have shown that Monsanto’s genetically-modified foods can lead to serious health conditions such as the development of cancer tumors, infertility and birth defects.

In the United States, the FDA, the agency tasked with ensuring food safety for the population, is steered by ex-Monsanto executives, and we feel that’s a questionable conflict of interests and explains the lack of government-led research on the long-term effects of GM products.

Recently, the U.S. Congress and president collectively passed the nicknamed “Monsanto Protection Act” that, among other things, bans courts from halting the sale of Monsanto’s genetically-modified seeds.

For too long, Monsanto has been the benefactor of corporate subsidies and political favoritism.

Organic and small farmers suffer losses while Monsanto continues to forge its monopoly over the world’s food supply, including exclusive patenting rights over seeds and genetic makeup.

Monsanto's GM seeds are harmful to the environment; for example, scientists have indicated they have contributed to Colony Collapse Disorder among the world's bee population.

What are solutions we advocate?

Voting with your dollar by buying organic and boycotting Monsanto-owned companies that use GMOs in their products.

Labeling of GMOs so that consumers can make those informed decisions easier.

Repealing relevant provisions of the US's "Monsanto Protection Act."

Calling for further scientific research on the health effects of GMOs.

Holding Monsanto executives and Monsanto-supporting politicians accountable through direct communication, grassroots journalism, social media, etc.

Continuing to inform the public about Monsanto's secrets.

Taking to the streets to show the world and Monsanto that we won't take these injustices quietly.

We will not stand for cronyism. We will not stand for poison. That’s why we March Against Monsanto.

Food Fight: Debating Prop 37, California’s Landmark Initiative to Label GMO Food

On Election Day, California voters will decide on Proposition 37, which would make their state the first in the nation to require the labeling of food products containing genetically modified organisms (GMOs). The California Department of Public Health would be responsible for labeling everything from baby formula and instant coffee, to granola, canned soups and soy milk. Many major corporations, including Monsanto, Dow Chemical, Pepsi and Coke, are spending millions fighting the measure, which stands to impact labeling practices across the country. We host a debate on Prop 37 with two guests: Stacy Malkan, a longtime advocate for environmental health and spokesperson for the Yes on 37 California Right to Know campaign, and David Zilberman, professor of agricultural and resource economics at University of California, Berkeley, and director of the Center for Sustainable Resource Development. Kucinich Calls Out Monsanto: Americans Demand GMO Labeling

Kucinich Calls Out Monsanto: Americans Demand GMO Labeling - YouTubePublished on Sep 19, 2012 by

In 1992 the Food and Drug Administration decided that genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are the functional equivalent of conventional foods. They arrived at this decision without testing GMOs for allergenicity, toxicity, anti-biotic resistance and functional characteristics. As a result hundreds of millions of acres of GMO crops were planted in America without the knowledge or consent of the American people: no safety testing and no long term health studies...
