4 Gorillas to Save the Earth: Election Protection, No Nukes, Military Money for Solartopia, Kill King CONG

4 Gorillas to Save the Earth:

 Election Protection, No Nukes,
Military Money for Solartopia,
Kill King CONG

By Harvey Wasserman

The Greta/AOC generation is marching for our place on this planet.

We can all turn off lights, get off plastic, go vegan, ride bikes, sail the Atlantic, demand eco-straws, solarize our homes.

But four gorillas block our way to survival.  They demand a next step of mass action far beyond anything we can do as individuals:

  1. ELECTION PROTECTION:  Big corporations have stolen our democracy When Jeb Bush ripped Florida 2000 for brother W, the corporate Democrats did nothing but rant at Ralph Nader.  But Jeb was ALWAYS going to get George exactly the votes as he needed.  Trumputin did it in 2016.  In 2020, stripped voter rolls and flipped vote counts could again steal the Electoral College.  Our Mother Earth DEMANDS universal hand-counted paper ballots, easy and open registration, fair access to the polls and much more.  This year Al Gore should shift his climate organizing to election protection—-and do it with Ralph.

2)   NO NUKES:  Reactors are killing us all.  They (430 worldwide, 96 in the US) spew heat, radiation, and carbon.  Chernobyl killed more than a million people and cost more than a trillion dollars.  Fukushima is poisoning the Pacific.  More will explode.  Radwaste is out of control.  Fantasy designs (thorium, fusion, etc) are absurd.  All existing reactors can be replaced with cheaper, cleaner, safer, more reliable and more job-producing solar, wind, batteries, and LED/efficiency.  DO IT NOW!!…before the next one blows!

3)  MILITARY MADNESS:  America’s imperial military (Earth’s worst polluter) wastes trillions.  We need our soldiers here installing wind turbines, solar panels, batteries, efficiency/LED lighting, planting trees and hemp.  The trillions wasted on worthless weapons (war is a racket!) must instead ride us to Solartopia.

4)  KILL KING CONG (Coal, Oil, Nukes & Gas):  WE need to own & run the fossil-nuke corporations.  The “free market” is a myth.  A handful of billionaires sucks up our cash.  Why do we bail them while they kill us and our planet?

Corporations are not human.  They care about nothing except money.  We need to control, own and reshape these industrial death machines.

We need to tax heat, carbon, and radiation.  Plant a trillion trees and an ocean of hemp.  Fund Solartopia with the military budget.  Own/control these “too-big-to-fail/kill-us-all ” corporations.

NOW!

Don't Let #DirtyEnergy Trump the #Climate | Crowdfunding and Petition

Help Us Mobilize to Save #CleanEnergy from Trump’s #DirtyEnergy Plan
The Trump administration is laying the groundwork for a massive dirty energy bailout to ensure America continues to rely on nuclear and coal for years to come. This is a fight for America’s clean energy future and everything that comes along with it--millions of good jobs, thriving communities, and safe, healthy food, air, and water.
Despite renewable energy's benefits, President Trump is prioritizing coal and nuclear industries and their executives by funneling billions of dollars in subsidies to keep dirty, old, dangerous power plants going.

NIRS is organizing to stop them, and we need you to join us!  Over the next six months, we have to educate and mobilize the public across the country. It is going to take petitions, protests, and lots of grassroots organizing – and we have to start now.

If we can stop Trump’s Nuclear and Coal Bailout, more of the dirty radiation and soot factories will close, and demand for solar, wind, and other clean, safe, efficient, renewable energy sources will accelerate.

We’ve started this crowdfunding campaign to raise $40,000 to get this effort off the ground.  The good news is: Your donation will go twice as far toward making that happen. Another generous supporter is offering to match every dollar you contribute, so your support will be doubled.
You might have already signed our petition against the Nuclear and Coal Bailout (if you haven’t, just click here)—that’s a great start!

But here’s the thing: we need to reach thousands more people, to make sure they know about Trump’s plans and can take action to stop it. We ask that you make a contribution to support the campaign, so we can reach more people like yourself. We also hope you will tell your friends about the petition, as well as this crowdfunding effort.
The good news is, some generous donors have offered to match every donation, no matter how big or small, to help us get there. For every dollar you and your friends give, another donor will match it.

Thanks for taking the time to learn about our campaign and for whatever support you can give.

6/11 SF Japan Consulate Speak-out :: Do Not Force The Families of Fukushima Back and Stop The Restarting of Japanese Nuclear Plants | No Nukes Action Committee

6/11 SF Japan Consulate Speak-out

San Francisco Japanese Consulate
275 Battery St./California St.
San Francisco
The people of Fukushima and Japan continued to be threatened by the ongoing contamination of Fukushima and the Abe government restarting of nuclear plants. The government continues to pressure Fukushima families and their children to return to Fukushima or lose their subsidies. These government demands is harming the health and mental conditions of the Fukushima refugees who do not want to return. The government which now controls Tokyo Electric Power Company continues to use thousands of contract workers to supposedly decontaminate the plant and the thousands of acres surrounding the plant. These workers do not have proper health and safety protection and the government uses the Yakuza to recruit day laborers and workers from other countries. They are also demanding that other prefectures or states “recycle” 16 million cubic meters of contaminated radioactive soil in construction projects throughout the country despite the danger of expanding the contamination of the entire population…

'Ichiefu,' manga by Fukushima nuke plant worker, to hit shelves abroad - The Mainichi

Three volumes of the manga "Ichiefu" are seen. (Mainichi)

"Ichiefu," a manga-cum-reportage series about the disaster-stricken Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant by an artist who actually works there, is set to be published in France, Germany, Spain, Italy and Taiwan.
A total of some 20,000 copies of the "Ichiefu" series -- a dispassionate account of operations at the plant based on the day-to-day working experiences of 50-year-old author Kazuto Tatsuta (a penname) -- will hit shelves in the foreign markets. The question now is: How will the manga be received abroad?

    Support The #OcNukeDaily and #OccupyNuclear - GoFundMe

Greetings! I have started a gofundme campaign for "OcNuke" / #OccupyNuclear‬ Please consider helping out! – My hope here is to recover a portion of my expenses for the purchase of a new laptop, recoup some of the monthly expenses for #OccupyNuclear, and to just have something to live on for a little while.
(see the gofundme page for more about my situation)
Following something of a sabbatical, and then a push for COP21 and my #BustTheMyth / "don't nuke the climate" campaign, my current plan is to revitalize #OccupyNuclear after the first of the year. My goal is to publicize and increase media exposure for, and, to inspire personal involvements in, world-wide anti-nuclear efforts, actions, news, networking and events. Please see occupynuclear.net.

Sweden To Become The World’s First Fossil Fuel-Free Nation In History | Collective-Evolution

The Swedish government recently announced that their aim is to become one of the world’s first nations to end its dependence on fossil fuels. They will be investing an extra 4.5 billion kronor (US$546 million) into renewable energy and climate change action in their 2016 budget.

Not long ago, UBS, the world’s largest private bank, began urging its investors to join the clean, renewable energy movement. Their analysts are predicting that power plants in Europe might become completely extinct within the next 10 to 20 years, and it seems they are correct. The dream of a ‘nuclear free’ Europe might become a reality sooner than expected, which explains why trillions of dollars are being divested...

Nukes Fade As Wind and Solar Soar | EcoWatch

With nuclear power falling ever further behind renewables as a global energy source, and as the price of oil and gas falls, the future of the industry in 2015 and beyond looks bleak.

    nukesrenewablessoar
Investors are increasingly skeptical about putting their money into nuclear—whereas renewables promise an increasingly rapid return on investment, and may get a further boost if the governments of the world finally take climate change seriously.

Renewables now supply 22 percent of global electricity and nuclear only 11 percent—a share that is gradually falling as old plants close and fewer new ones are commissioned.
New large-scale installations of wind and solar power arrays continue to surge across the world. Countries without full grids and power outages, such as India, increasingly find that wind and solar are quick and easy ways to bring electricity to people who have previously had no supply...

Tell your Senators NOW: Do not fund Yucca Mountain to become a nuclear dump.

    December 4, 2014,

    Dear Friends,

The Yucca Mountain site never should have been chosen for permanent disposal of highly radioactive waste. The Department of Energy (DOE) declared the site to be unworkable and it was taken off the table by President Obama in 2010. DOE withdrew the license application but it is still pending.

But the incoming Republican-led Congress could well try to revive the failed project--many members of the House of Representatives have been pushing for that for the past four years.

Yucca Mountain would leak radioactivity because it is plagued by combined risks from earthquakes, volcanic activity, eventual groundwater contamination and air emissions projected to violate the lax regulations that were weakened to accommodate the site. Because of the refusal of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to allow taxpayer funding for Yucca Mountain, the project has received no money for more than 4 years.

Yucca Mountain has failed as a permanent radioactive waste repository. Here's a new NIRS fact sheet on some of the technical reasons for that failure. It's time to move on.As the Congress now negotiates budget deals, tell your Senators and Representatives below: No Funds For Yucca Mountain Licensing.

Notes: You must have a U.S. address to participate in this action. Please use the icons above to share this action page before sending your letter to your Congressmembers. Please feel free to edit the letter to reflect your own concerns.

The People's Climate March is one month away, but you can start it now!

    August 21, 2014

    Dear Friends,

The historic People's Climate March is just one month away--September 21, 2014. And NIRS and all the other groups supporting this massive event have launched an all-out mobilizing campaign starting now.

This weekend, we ask every organization--and every individual--supporting the Nuclear Free-Carbon-Free Contingent to help get the word out about this event. Send an e-mail--or just forward this one--to everyone on your lists. Put up a notice on your websites and blogs; post on Facebook/Twitter or any other social media sites you use. Send a letter to the editor of your local paper about why you're going to the march, or just to raise awareness of it (we've made this easy for you, see details below).

    The March Starts Now

We're not waiting until September 21--we're kicking off the march now! We're creating a photo gallery of marchers to visually tell everyone why we're marching. And if you absolutely can't come to New York City on September 21, this is a perfect way for you to stand and be counted.

It's easy. Just download and print one of the signs we have posted on our new The March Starts Now page (or make a sign of your own), and then take a selfie of you holding the sign, or get a partner or friend to take the photo and then take one of him/her too. Group shots encouraged too. Then send the photos to nirsnet@nirs.organd we'll post them in the photo gallery. Get started here.

    Sign Up for the March

If you're coming to the march, but haven't yet signed up on the People's Climate March website, please do so now using this special code, which indicates your sign-up is coming through the Nuclear-Free, Carbon-Free Contingent:http://peoplesclimate.org/march?r=nukefree. The reason to sign up is so march organizers can have a better sense of how many people to expect--this is important for logistical and planning purposes.

We encourage you to sign up for the Nuclear-Free, Carbon-Free Contingent as well, for the same reasons. Plus, it will help us keep those of you we know are coming better informed about the Contingent's plans, especially any last-minute changes. You can sign up for the Contingent here.

    National Nuclear-Free, Carbon-Free Activist Meeting

Besides the march on Sunday, September 21, NIRS is sponsoring a national meeting of activists all afternoon on Saturday, September 20. We're still working on exact time and location, but it will be in an accessible location in New York City. The purpose of the meeting will be to strengthen grassroots networks to be able to better organize and prepare for the many upcoming regional and state battles we all will be facing when the EPA's Clean Power Plan rule goes into effect next year. These battles will be critical for the future of nuclear power--we can close dirty, dangerous and uneconomic nuclear reactors and end talk of a nuclear "renaissance" for good, or face potentially decades of stagnation of renewable energy and energy efficiency in favor of dirty energy. The stakes are that high--but these are battles we can win. Please join us at this important meeting. We will keep you informed about time and location.

    Some March updates

The march route has been set, you can see the route and a map on our main Contingent website here. The march will kick off at 11:30 am on September 21; contingents will be assembling north of Columbus Circle. We will inform you of the assembly point and time for the Nuclear-Free, Carbon-Free Contingent as soon as it is confirmed.

There are numerous other useful resources on the Contingent website, including flyers for downloading; organizing and mobilizing guides; information on transportation to NYC; background reading and much more.

The site is updated daily and will be through September 21.

122 organizations from across the world have now endorsed the Nuclear-Free, Carbon-Free Contingent, and new endorsements arrive daily. If your organization has not yet endorsed the Contingent, please send your name, organization name, city, state and country (if outside the U.S.) to us at nirsnet@nirs.org.

More than 1400 individuals have also signed a statement in support of the Contingent. You can add your name here.

    Letters to the Editor

We have provided a sample letter for you to send to your local news outlets. You'll be able to choose which paper(s) it will be sent to. Then, edit the letter to reflect your own views and concerns (especially local ones), and your letter will automatically be sent to your local media. Research continues to show that letters to the editor remain among the highest-read portions of newspapers (including online ones). It's a great way to spread the word and we've made it as easy as possible for you. Get started here, it will only take you a few moments.

Facebook/Twitter and other social media posts

Here are a few sample posts you can use on your social media pages to help spread the word:

    Twitter

Friends, help spread the word about the Nuclear-Free, Carbon-Free Contingent to the People's Climate March in NYC on September 21. http://www.nirs.org/climatemarch/climatemarchhome.htm

Don't forget to Comment to EPA!

Finally, if you have not yet sent in your comments on the EPA's Clean Power Plan, please so do now here. Many people have not yet done so, and in this case, every single comment matters. The nuclear industry is mounting a major lobbying effort toincrease support for nuclear power in the plan--our united and large call to remove all nuclear support for the plan is the only thing that will stop them.
The Nuclear-Free, Carbon-Free Contingent to the People's Climate March is one of the most exciting and meaningful events I've been part of in my nearly 30 years at NIRS. It's just amazing to see the enthusiasm and spirit growing the way it is. This will a momentous weekend. I really do hope you'll join me, all the NIRS staff, and people from all over the country in New York City on September 21.
