The Trump administration is laying the groundwork for a massive dirty energy bailout to ensure America continues to rely on nuclear and coal for years to come. This is a fight for America’s clean energy future and everything that comes along with it--millions of good jobs, thriving communities, and safe, healthy food, air, and water. 

Despite renewable energy's benefits, President Trump is prioritizing coal and nuclear industries and their executives by funneling billions of dollars in subsidies to keep dirty, old, dangerous power plants going.

NIRS is organizing to stop them, and we need you to join us!  Over the next six months, we have to educate and mobilize the public across the country. It is going to take petitions, protests, and lots of grassroots organizing – and we have to start now.

If we can stop Trump’s Nuclear and Coal Bailout, more of the dirty radiation and soot factories will close, and demand for solar, wind, and other clean, safe, efficient, renewable energy sources will accelerate.

We’ve started this crowdfunding campaign to raise $40,000 to get this effort off the ground.  The good news is: Your donation will go twice as far toward making that happen. Another generous supporter is offering to match every dollar you contribute, so your support will be doubled. 

You might have already signed our petition against the Nuclear and Coal Bailout (if you haven’t, just click here)—that’s a great start!

But here’s the thing: we need to reach thousands more people, to make sure they know about Trump’s plans and can take action to stop it. We ask that you make a contribution to support the campaign, so we can reach more people like yourself.  Democracy Now! hit the streets Sunday to speak to some of the thousands of protesters who marched through the streets of Philadelphia to demand a ban on fracking and a transition to clean energy. Despite a scorching heat wave, up to 10,000 people took to the streets for hours. This comes as climate change-fueled extreme weather continues across the world. In California, a wildfire north of Los Angeles doubled in size Sunday, just one day after a burned body was discovered outside a home in Santa Clarita north of Los Angeles.

I’m with a group called the Nuclear Information and Resource Service based in Washington, D.C., and I’m here with the Nuclear-Free, Carbon-Free contingent to the March for a Clean Energy Revolution. We’re here to send the message that a clean energy future has got to be both nuclear-free and carbon-free. Right now, there’s, you know, attempts to bail out the nuclear industry going on across the country, including in New York state, where Governor Cuomo is trying to build a reputation for himself as a clean energy governor, is trying to do a seven-point—include a $7.6 billion bailout to nuclear power plants in a supposed clean energy standard that he wants to pass in a week. And this is going to be a disaster for renewable energy and our clean energy future. There’s nothing about bailing our nuclear power plants that puts any solar panels on anybody’s roofs, builds any windmills or gets anybody energy efficiency. It’s really going to prop up the energy status quo. [see

Join us on July 24 as we join thousands in the streets of Philadelphia marching for a Clean Energy Revolution!

We are forming a Nuclear-Free, Carbon-Free Contingent, and we want you to join us. We will demand an end to nuclear power and fossil fuels, and a just transition to a 100% renewable energy world. We will march with thousands from coast to coast on the eve of the Democratic National Convention, calling on all of our political leaders to take immediate action.

Rather than hearing about expensive problems, people are looking to be inspired by solutions that provide an immediate economic reward. And this is exactly what fighting climate change can offer today if we accept to modify our understanding of the situation.

Relying fully on clean energy is not only good for the environment, human health and the economy, it is also doable

The climate agreement reached in Paris is provoking a flurry of caveats, criticisms and cautions. Many of those criticisms are warranted and there’s a lot of work ahead to make sure countries live up to their promises. But we should not miss a chance to celebrate a historic turning point.

World leaders finally made commitments to clean, renewable energy that will help to ensure a safer, healthier and more prosperous future for us all. The agreement signals that the age of fossil fuels is coming to a close, and the age of renewable energy is dawning. 

In many ways, the Paris deal is the mother of all market signals. To deliver on the promises world leaders made, we will need to leave coal and oil in the ground and move toward a complete reliance on clean energy. Let’s not miss the writing on the wall: fossil fuels are a losing bet, while renewables offer economic opportunity.

A new report on efficiency in Michigan shows that for every dollar spent on reducing energy waste consumers are seeing $4.38 in benefits -- the highest level since 2010, Midwest Energy News reports.

The historic People's Climate March is just one month away--September 21, 2014. And NIRS and all the other groups supporting this massive event have launched an all-out mobilizing campaign starting now.

This weekend, we ask every organization--and every individual--supporting the Nuclear Free-Carbon-Free Contingent to help get the word out about this event. Send an e-mail--or just forward this one--to everyone on your lists. Put up a notice on your websites and blogs; post on Facebook/Twitter or any other social media sites you use. Send a letter to the editor of your local paper about why you're going to the march, or just to raise awareness of it (we've made this easy for you, see details below).

The March Starts Now

We're not waiting until September 21--we're kicking off the march now! We're creating a photo gallery of marchers to visually tell everyone why we're marching. And if you absolutely can't come to New York City on September 21, this is a perfect way for you to stand and be counted.

It's easy. Just download and print one of the signs we have posted on our new The March Starts Now page (or make a sign of your own), and then take a selfie of you holding the sign, or get a partner or friend to take the photo and then take one of him/her too. National Nuclear-Free, Carbon-Free Activist Meeting

Besides the march on Sunday, September 21, NIRS is sponsoring a national meeting of activists all afternoon on Saturday, September 20. We're still working on exact time and location, but it will be in an accessible location in New York City. The purpose of the meeting will be to strengthen grassroots networks to be able to better organize and prepare for the many upcoming regional and state battles we all will be facing when the EPA's Clean Power Plan rule goes into effect next year. These battles will be critical for the future of nuclear power--we can close dirty, dangerous and uneconomic nuclear reactors and end talk of a nuclear "renaissance" for good, or face potentially decades of stagnation of renewable energy and energy efficiency in favor of dirty energy.The stakes are that high--but these are battles we can win. Please join us at this important meeting. We will keep you informed about time and location.

The march will kick off at 11:30 am on September 21; contingents will be assembling north of Columbus Circle. We will inform you of the assembly point and time for the Nuclear-Free, Carbon-Free Contingent as soon as it is confirmed.

There are numerous other useful resources on the Contingent website, including flyers for downloading; organizing and mobilizing guides; information on transportation to NYC; background reading and much more.

The site is updated daily and will be through September 21.

NUCLEAR POWER ADVOCATES BELIEVE THE TECHNOLOGY IS ESSENTIAL TO BUILDING A FOSSIL FUEL FREE WORLD ENERGY SYSTEM. IN FACT IT IS OPTIONAL, WRITES DAVID ELLIOTT - AND NOT EVEN VERY HELPFUL. EFFICIENCY AND THE 'NEW RENEWABLES' CAN DO THE JOB FASTER, AND AT MUCH LOWER COST.

We can head for a near 100% renewable future should we wish. The key questions are how quickly can, should or must we do that?

Renewable energy is doing well around the world - supplying around 22% of global electricity.

In 2013, the world achieved 1,560 gigawatts (GW) of renewable electricity generation capacity - almost five times more than the 331 GW of nuclear generation capacity. And where nuclear power supplied 11% of the world's electricity, renewables about twice as much.

Hydro is the biggest electricity supplying renewable, with around 1,000GW of generation capacity in place. Wind comes next at 318GW, while PV solar is at around 139GW globally. And on the heat side, along with biomass use, solar thermal is now at 326GW, much of it in China.

Will renewables continue to grow? Globally, the recession hit all investment, and total global investment in 'clean energy' of all sorts fell 9% in 2013 to $254bn, following a 9% drop in 2012, according to Bloomberg New Energy Finance.

Renewables take 72% share of new generating capacity

But within that, renewables have held up quite well. The REN21 group says 2013 marked the sixth consecutive year in which renewables had the majority share of new electricity generating capacity, with a 72% share in 2013...
