4 Gorillas to Save the Earth:

The Greta/AOC generation is marching for our place on this planet.  

We can all turn off lights, get off plastic, go vegan, ride bikes, sail the Atlantic, demand eco-straws, solarize our homes. 

But four gorillas block our way to survival.  They demand a next step of mass action far beyond anything we can do as individuals:

1. ELECTION PROTECTION:  Big corporations have stolen our democracy When Jeb Bush ripped Florida 2000 for brother W, the corporate Democrats did nothing but rant at Ralph Nader.  But Jeb was ALWAYS going to get George exactly the votes as he needed.  Trumputin did it in 2016.  In 2020, stripped voter rolls and flipped vote counts could again steal the Electoral College.  Our Mother Earth DEMANDS universal hand-counted paper ballots, easy and open registration, fair access to the polls and much more.  This year Al Gore should shift his climate organizing to election protection—-and do it with Ralph. 

2)   NO NUKES:  Reactors are killing us all.  They (430 worldwide, 96 in the US) spew heat, radiation, and carbon.  Chernobyl killed more than a million people and cost more than a trillion dollars.  Fukushima is poisoning the Pacific.  More will explode.  Radwaste is out of control.  Fantasy designs (thorium, fusion, etc) are absurd.  All existing reactors can be replaced with cheaper, cleaner, safer, more reliable and more job-producing solar, wind, batteries, and LED/efficiency.  DO IT NOW!!…before the next one blows!

3)  MILITARY MADNESS:  America’s imperial military (Earth’s worst polluter) wastes trillions.  We need our soldiers here installing wind turbines, solar panels, batteries, efficiency/LED lighting, planting trees and hemp.  The trillions wasted on worthless weapons (war is a racket!) must instead ride us to Solartopia. 

4)  KILL KING CONG (Coal, Oil, Nukes & Gas):  WE need to own & run the fossil-nuke corporations.  The “free market” is a myth.  A handful of billionaires sucks up our cash.  Why do we bail them while they kill us and our planet?

Corporations are not human.  They care about nothing except money.  We need to control, own and reshape these industrial death machines. 

We need to tax heat, carbon, and radiation.  Plant a trillion trees and an ocean of hemp.  Fund Solartopia with the military budget.  Own/control these “too-big-to-fail/kill-us-all ” corporations.

When I began my term as a public policy scholar at the Wilson Center last year working on the project “Science and the Media,” I ran into a journalist colleague I hadn’t seen in years. When he heard what I was doing, he said in astonishment, “Science? How did you get interested in that?”

He wasn’t the only one to react that way. It’s a symptom of the relationship — or more precisely, the lack of a relationship — between scientists and the vast majority of journalists who do not cover science that such an interest is seen as unusual.

Not only journalists view science in this way. Many in the public do too. To the majority of Americans, science is a foreign country.

I don’t have a science background, and developed an interest in the sciences through a somewhat roundabout route. Years of taking groups of editors on fact-finding/study tours to Africa, Latin America, Asia and elsewhere introduced me to landscapes and creatures in the natural world of astonishing beauty and variety, and the fascinating professionals who often took insane risks to study them, seeking to understand how things worked and why.

So for my project I decided to concentrate on the general media — the 90 percent who almost never meet scientists or write about science, and to focus on the natural world. I wanted to see what the barriers were to engagement, and to explore how these two groups might begin a conversation, and maybe even work together in mutually beneficial ways.

In the process, I discovered how much these two communities have to offer each other, far beyond the subject matter.

But things which can’t continue, won’t.  These include not just the U.S. empire but, looking to the whole developed world, our luxurious way of life and complex industrial society.  We usually assume the era of our empire over the earth will be prolonged to some vague future extent that is not relevant to our present personal plans – which is to say, prolonged indefinitely.

It’s time to wake up and notice the desperate measures we are undertaking to get the fuels we need to keep it all going, the dust storms, the storm surges, the paralysis in the Capital, the inanity and surreality of our public discourse.  The end of our misbegotten and predatory empire is at hand.  By the middle of this decade tremendous strains will be even more evident than today, and by 2020 our outlook will be quite different.  There are too many reasons for this to explain in detail, so in this post I will touch upon only a couple of them and in (alas!) a qualitative way.

If this is true, shouldn’t we start investing our hopes and lives in what will soon follow?  Assuming we care about our children and grandchildren.  Major changes take time, and we have very little of that, so we had better get started now.

Now is the only time in which action ever occurs (though our power of making promises can extend it), but “for now” what I mean is that this is something that each should start taking care of this week, and every week after that.  Most of us in the U.S. live a cave of political ignorance and inexperience, so we don’t know what to do or how to proceed.  We may even think we participate in a democracy because we vote!  The first steps we take will brighten our path, as long as we keep going.  The country we thought we had is lost, so it will be a brave new world, regardless.  The biggest question is whether we are brave enough for it, which means first and foremost overcoming the ingrained and enforced selfishness of consumer society...

Billionaires' fortunes hinder fight against poverty, says Oxfam

The vast fortunes made by the world's richest 100 billionaires is driving up inequality and hindering the world's ability to tackle poverty, according to Oxfam.

The charity said the accumulation of wealth and income on an unprecedented scale, often at the expense of secure jobs and decent wages for the poorest, undermined the ability of people who survive on aid or low wages to improve their situation and escape poverty.

Oxfam said the world's poorest could be lifted out of poverty several times over should the richest 100 billionaires give away the money they made last year.

Without pointing a finger at individuals, the charity argued that the $240bn (£150bn) net income amassed in 2012 by the richest 100 billionaires would be enough to make extreme poverty history four times over.

Quantum physics in the form of its famous observer effect (how an observation transforms quantum possibilities into actual experiences in the observer’s consciousness) is forcing us into a paradigm shift away from the primacy-of-matter to a new paradigm: the Primacy of Consciousness. Quantum Activism is the idea of changing ourselves and our societies in accordance with the transformative and revolutionary message of quantum physics. This change is taking its cue from the emergence of a new paradigm within science; the paradigm of a consciousness based reality as articulated by Quantum Physics...

So what are the transformative messages of quantum physics? First, consciousness is the ground of all being, and all objects of our experience (sensing, thinking, feeling, and intuition) are quantum possibilities for consciousness to choose from.

Second, if we choose from what is known, that is to say, what is conditioned in us from prior experiences, we are choosing from our ego-consciousness. But if we choose what is unknown, what is unmanifest in our prior experiences, we are choosing from what spiritual traditions call God-consciousness (in scientific language we call it quantum consciousness). Choosing from God-consciousness requires quantum leaps (movement from point A to point B without going through intermediate steps), nonlocality (signalless communication), and tangled hierarchy (causal relationships of circularity)

The third message of quantum physics is the evolution of consciousness, and it is taking us toward a greater and greater capacity for processing the meaning of our lives and the world around us. The immediate future of evolution is promising to take us from our current preoccupation with the rational mind to an intuitive mind that values the archetypes; such as Good, Beauty, Truth, Justice, and Love, and gives us the ability to process the meaning of our lives through these archetypes.

So the goal of the quantum activist is to explore quantum possibilities and manifest these archetypes—Good, Beauty, Truth, Justice, and Love—in his or her life as intimately and as expressly as one can, and in doing so to help transform the world. The means a quantum activist uses to achieve this goal are threefold—right thinking, right living, and right livelihood.

Right thinking consists of understanding the paradigm shift from a user’s point of view and helping others in our environment to do so. Right living consists of walking the talk, manifesting our understanding in how we live, and becoming guiding examples for the inspiration of others. As such it takes a lot of quantum leaps, openness to being in the nonlocality of God consciousness which informs the doing of the ego’s day to day activities;, and the desire to change hierarchical relationships into tangled ones. Right livelihood consists of earning our living in a way that is congruent with our modes of thinking and living and helping our entire society to achieve this congruence.

It is exciting you say, but is that enough to motivate me? I will tell you my fundamental understanding: if you are reading this column you are already motivated. You know what? 

Consciousness is already pressuring you to join its evolutionary movement.
So what do we do now? We become Quantum Activists of course!

Tough Talk From Environmental Activist Dr. Helen Caldicott

Dr. Helen Caldicott has passionately devoted the last 40 years to educating the global community about the inherent risks and dangers of nuclear energy and weapons and the critical changes needed to restore and help save our embattled Earth. The Australian-born medical doctor (a pediatrician) and former Nobel Peace Prize nominee is the author of five books and the founder of several organizations including Physicians for Social Responsibility, Women's Action for New Directions (WAND) and The Helen Caldicott Foundation/NuclearFreePlanet.org. I recently had the opportunity to talk to the world renowned activist and environmental prophet at Green America's Green Festival in New York City, where she delivered an urgent and electrifying speech. Dr. Caldicott, who has been outspoken about the health and environmental dangers of nuclear power since before the Three Mile Island and Chernobyl meltdowns, prays that we will take heed from the recent Fukushima nuclear disaster, which resulted in the Japanese government shutting down all 54 of Japan's nuclear reactors, and spark a global trend to close nuclear power plants. Her frustration and anger at the lack of meaningful progress on this issue is palpable; as is her inspiring hope and belief in the collective power of individual citizens to raise their voices and create the political will to take action. What's at stake, as she reminds us in this candid interview, is our moral and spiritual imperative to protect our children and our Mother Earth. As she bluntly puts it, " The planet's in the intensive care unit, critically, acutely ill, and now we are all physicians to a dying planet." She urges, "Let the data sink in and then get off your couches to save the planet for your children."

Marianne Schnall: What is the one message you are most hoping to get out there?

Helen Caldicott: There isn't one message, there are three. One is that we are in dire danger from global warming and that unless we pull our socks up and stop burning coal and stop driving our SUV's around doing five miles to the gallon and stop fracking and natural gas, we're doomed. The temperature is on the way to be three degrees centigrade hotter by the middle of the century, which is almost antithetical to human existence, and six degrees by the end of the century - this is the top leading scientific data now that is available. I mean, we're killing the earth! Overtly. And we don't love our children enough, because if we did, we would be taking the necessary steps to stop burning coal and saving energy, you know.."

How much time did you spend on facebook last week? Be honest with yourself. I’ll be honest with myself too. Between updating statuses, posting pictures, sending tweets and watching youtube videos the minutes really begin to add up. It’s no question that today’s society has become preoccupied with a technological revolution. And unfortunately part of that revolution includes a growing deficit in real human interaction.

Now don’t get me wrong, I’m all for social networking. Just today I was talking online with friends from elementary school that I would have otherwise lost touch with. And you wouldn’t be reading these words right now without it. But I think we all need to be reminded about what’s real and most important in life: personal connection. It’s one thing to text your best friend that you’re thinking of them but it’s a whole different story when you can give them a hug, look them in the eye and tell them you love them to their face.

Living in such a fast-paced society we often only skim the surface of our relationships with quick hellos and superficial conversation. To really connect with someone, heart to heart and soul to soul, requires us to open ourselves up and allow other people into a deeper place within us. There’s a lot going on in there that even you might not be aware of. Having a real, authentic connection with another person involves an exchange of energy that can help bring out a lot of new discoveries about yourself. It’s exciting. It’s growth. It’s life.

So next time you go out on a lunch date with your friend, leave your blackberry in the car and give that lucky person your full attention. Listen attentively, be open and see if you can get a little bit deeper than reliving the party you went to last weekend or updating each other on celebrity drama. If you have kids, take the time to really have a connection with them. Turn off the TV, find out what they’re learning in school and who their new friends are. There’s a whole world of thoughts, desires, fears, dreams and dilemmas that exists inside of each of us and we should all have the courage to explore this world and share it with others.
