COP21 actions go ahead: 'We are not defending nature - we are nature defending itself' - The Ecologist

'We are Nature defending itself': an activist makes moss graffiti in Paris with the slogan of the Climate Games. Photo: @JEBA_JE via Twitter.

As the Paris climate summit falls under the brutal double cosh of terrorism and a heavy-handed security response targeted at climate campaigners, creative non-violent responses are taking shape to express the collective will of the billions who cannot be there, writes Nadine Bloch: the need for equitable solutions to the climate crisis, as a first step towards a healthy, peaceful, sustainable planet...

The 25 Rules of Disinformation

From Twenty-Five Ways To Suppress Truth: The Rules of Disinformation (Includes The 8 Traits of A Disinformationalist) by H. Michael Sweeney. These 25 rules are everywhere in media, from political debates, to television shows, to comments on a blog.

1. Hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil. Regardless of what you know, don’t discuss it — especially if you are a public figure, news anchor, etc. If it’s not reported, it didn’t happen, and you never have to deal with the issues.

2. Become incredulous and indignant. Avoid discussing key issues and instead focus on side issues which can be used show the topic as being critical of some otherwise sacrosanct group or theme. This is also known as the “How dare you!” gambit...

3. Create rumor mongers. Avoid discussing issues by describing all charges, regardless of venue or evidence, as mere rumors and wild accusations. Other derogatory terms mutually exclusive of truth may work as well. This method works especially well with a silent press, because the only way the public can learn of the facts are through such “arguable rumors”. If you can associate the material with the Internet, use this fact to certify it a “wild rumor” which can have no basis in fact...

Socialism or barbarism? | Green Left Weekly

From the first day it appeared online, the masthead of the Climate and Capitalism blog has carried the slogan "Ecosocialism or Barbarism: there is no third way".
We've been quite clear that eco-socialism is not a new theory or brand of socialism — it is socialism with Marx's important insights on ecology restored, socialism committed to the fight against ecological destruction.
But why do we say that the alternative to ecosocialism is barbarism?

Marxists have used the word "barbarism" in various ways, but most often to describe actions or social conditions that are grossly inhumane, brutal, and violent. It is not a word used lightly, because it implies not just bad behaviour but violations of the most important norms of human solidarity and civilised life...

Corporate Imperialism – The only reason for GMOs

“Here’s what I’ll do as President. I’ll immediately implement Country of Origin Labelling because Americans should know where their food comes from. And we’ll let folks know whether their food has been genetically modified because Americans should know what they’re buying,”
– President Barack Obama
President Obama’s campaign promise reassured the American people President Obama was on their side, looking out for their basic right to safe food. As his second term comes closer to an end, President Obama’s promise to protect American people from the established and yet-unknown effects of genetically modified food, lies un-fulfilled. What happened between the campaign trail and the taking of office? Did Obama change his mind on the importance of letting Americans know what they are eating? The President’s and the First Family’s food is organic. He has not changed his mind but his window to fulfil his promise of 2007 is closing fast. Or was that window sealed shut as soon as he took office? Is the most powerful person in the world not allowed to safely label the food his country eats, even if he wants to?

Sweden To Become The World’s First Fossil Fuel-Free Nation In History | Collective-Evolution

The Swedish government recently announced that their aim is to become one of the world’s first nations to end its dependence on fossil fuels. They will be investing an extra 4.5 billion kronor (US$546 million) into renewable energy and climate change action in their 2016 budget.

Not long ago, UBS, the world’s largest private bank, began urging its investors to join the clean, renewable energy movement. Their analysts are predicting that power plants in Europe might become completely extinct within the next 10 to 20 years, and it seems they are correct. The dream of a ‘nuclear free’ Europe might become a reality sooner than expected, which explains why trillions of dollars are being divested...

It really happened late last week, as residents throughout California -- representing a diverse coalition of consumer, environmental, faith, public health, environmental justice, and business organizations --gathered on the CPUC steps to deliver more than 130,000 signatures in support of net metering.
This petition marks the largest number of public comments ever recorded at the CPUC on any issue...

While Britain visualises a nuclear future, Angela Merkel’s aim of replacing it with renewables by 2022 is well under way...

Hinkley Point will be the first nuclear power plant to be built in Europe since the meltdown of Japan’s Fukushima reactor in 2011. But while the British government sees nuclear energy as a safe and reliable source of power, Germany is going in a different direction.

As a result of the Fukushima, Chancellor Angela Merkel pledged to switch off all nuclear power by 2022 and fill the gap with renewables – a process known as the energiewende (energy transition)...
